Certify documents issued in Benin for international use

Documents issued in Benin needed for use abroad are legalized by the Benin Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et de la Coopération). In most cases, documents will also need to be attested by the embassy of the recipient country with jurisdiction for Benin.

  • Benin is not a member of the Apostille Convention and does not issue Apostille stamps.
  • Documents are legalized at the Benin Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Benin in 2 - 5 business days
  • Where the recipient country does not have a local embassy in Benin, documents will need to be legalized at the nearest embassy (normally in Abuja, Accra).
  • Isarey can assist with attesting documents at embassies in Cotonou, including the embassies of Qatar, Belgium, France, Germany and the United Arab Emirates, as well as non-resident embassies in Nigeria and Ghana.

Legalize Benin Documents

Benin documents can be certified for cross-border use through legalization

Consular Legalization

Legalization is a procedure used when a Benin document needs to be certified for official use abroad. Each document requires a double certification: first by the authorities of Benin and secondly by the authorities of the country where the documents will be used (the receiving country). This second certification, which is generally provided by the embassy or consulate representing the receiving country in Benin, confirms the first certification and so validates the document for official use in the receiving country.

Certified Translation

Where Benin documents are to be used abroad and where the receiving country has a different official language, certified translation may also be required. Isarey takes care of any certified translations required as part of the document attestation process, ensuring that translations are carried out and certified in accordance with local regulations.

Note that a certified translation on its own only provides assurance that the translation itself is accurate and true; it does not confirm the authenticity of the original document. The original document must be legalized for a certified translation to carry equivalent legal weight.
